John Schaffer R.I.P.

On the 16th of August we attended the funeral of our dear friend John Schaffer who sadly passed away on 25th July aged 92. The funeral was held at Forest Road crematorium, during the service John's son Mark read a moving eulogy. A wake was held at the Ceders Club in Chadwell Heath where the family laid on a fantastic spread of food. John was member of St Chads for many, many years and he really loved the club. He had lots of other loves in his life, his family, wine, food and his music. He was fond of oom-pa-pa, country &western and reggae music, also having been a drummer in a group who performed in Windsor once a week. John took great pride in his appearance, he was always immaculately turned out and took great pride in still having a good head of hair for a man of his age. One of his greatest pleasures was in fact getting a hair cut, it's been mentioned that Paul's Barbers in Chadwell Heath took a big drop in profits when John had to stop going there.. John will be greatly missed by his family and friends alike. His infectious laugh and humour will be something that will remain in our memories of him for a long time. It was great shame that ill-health plagued him for the last few years of his life, depriving him, and his family, of being able to do the things he loved. In particular, having to spend the last year of his life in bed must have been very difficult for him but those who visited him when they could always found he had lost none of his cheeky humour, he bore it well. The bowling club has lost another long-standing member who although not playing anymore, was part of the fabric of the club and we remember him fondly. Bernard Secretary of St Chads Bowls Club.
